VIDEO: POLYTECHNIC STUDENTS PROTEST CLOSURE OF SCHOOLS

Our Agitations and Protests havent gone unnoticed.

Even when some media houses have decided to turn deaf ears and blind eyes to cries over the closure of schools of  all polytechnics in the country,a few have found reasons to atleast give us a hearing as well as coverage.

Our recent protest in Lagos was recently covered and broadcast on the network of Television Continental,TVC Lagos.

It is our expectation that other print and electronic media houses will follow suit.

CALL OFF THIS STRIKE, STUDENTS BEG ASUP

In a bid to return to their classrooms and continue with their academic activities, students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, MAPOLY, have appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, to end the strike action which has crippled activities in polytechnics across the country.

Some of the respondents revealed that they have been idle since the commencement of the strike action and any further delay may cause more harm than good.
An ND1 Accounting student of the institution, Adisa Oluwafehinsola Lydia siad: “I’ve been idle since ASUP embarked on the strike action and it’s really killing me. Our school calendars will also be affected with this action.”

“I want the federal government to consider us and give ASUP their demands so that this strike action will be called off as soon as possible,” she added.
Speaking in the same vein, another student, Oshilaja Olatunji, lamented that apart from the effect of the strike action on the school calendar, he has been spending more than necessary since the strike action had been embarked upon.
He also added that those who were supposed to be working on their projects would be delayed.

“It is unfortunate that the federal government has closed its eyes to the yearning of these people because we’re the ones bearing the brunt.”
Onifade Akinyemi, a Business Administration student of the institution, said the effects of the strike action are devastating as it prevents them from catching up with their counterparts in the universities.

“All my friends in the university will be ahead of me with this kind of setting, it’s also not good enough for the school calendar because it will draw us back.”
“We heard that the Board of Directors had a meeting yesterday  and t they insisted on continuing with the strike. I know it’s quite annoying but that’s what we have to live with until the federal government gives them what they want,” she said.

POLYTECHNICS STRIKE: NAPS, NANS CALL ON FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FOR URGENT INTERVENTION

THE National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), have called on the Federal Government, to as a matter of urgency, intervene in the nationwide strike embarked upon by all the three unions in the nation’s polytechnics.

It will be recalled that the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP) and the Non- Academic Staff Union (NASU) are currently on industrial action over government’s refusal to implement agreements it signed, aimed at rejuvenating the polytechnic system. The president-elect of NAPS, Mr Ogbonnaya Sunday, who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune, shortly after the union’s national convention, held at the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, at the weekend, said the strike had grounded all activities in the polytechnics.

He said:  “We are begging the Federal Government to look into ASUP’s recommendations and come up with a commendable stand so that this strike can be called off. .. “Gone are the days we use violence to get what we want. We believe in three Cs— consultation, consolidation and confrontation.
“Like I said, we will not confront, but will make sure that we exhaust our two Cs— consultation and consolidation. It is when those two fails, then we will consider the last option.”

The NANS Senate President, Donald Onukaogu, admonished President Goodluck Jonathan, to take seriously the welfare of civil servants and warned the leadership of ASUP not to politicise its demand from government...

Onukaogu said: “We have had a press conference on that issue and we told government clearly that staff welfare is important. The hallmark of any virile education sector is having a well-mobilised workforce. “We have equally told the ASUP that it should not politicise its demands. It should not make demands and go on strike over every little thing. It must always face the reality. “It must consider the financial strength of the country, what is achievable and workable before making its demands?”....
